Sufferers - Who it Affects
Whilst young women are more frequently affected, anyone can develop an Eating Disorder, men & women, young and old.
Common personality traits of someone who develops an eating disorder include
- Acute sensitivity
- A creative mentality
- High intelligence
- Caring nature
- Perfectionist tendencies
However because for most clients with eating disorders, the eating disorder itself acts as a substitute identity for the authentic self.
So having a functioning eating disorder ensures these positive traits go ‘underground’ in the sufferer.
The person then lives in a state of mental negativity and cannot recognize or own these positive traits in themselves.
Recovery helps those characteristics reassert themselves once again, and the sufferer recognizes the truth that happiness and self-esteem come from loving oneself for who you truly are.
